Surfing Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Santa Teresa Is A Punchy Beach Break with Year-Round Surf

one of Costa Rica’s top surf destinations

The Spot: Santa Teresa is one of Costa Rica’s top surf destinations—a powerful, punchy beach break offering A-frame peaks up and down the shoreline. With consistent swells and a vibrant surf culture, this spot draws surfers from around the world.

Spanning approximately 3 km of white sand, Playa Santa Teresa features multiple peaks that come alive on the right swell. The main peak at La Lora is the most popular, but you'll find plenty of quality waves both north and south. Breaks on all tides, but mid to low tide delivers the best shape. Packs more punch than neighboring Playa Carmen—barrels are common in the right conditions.

Crowd & Vibe: Main Peaks are way more busy and more competitive than Playa Carmen. Show respect and you’ll be fine. Avoid snaking, back-paddling, or crowding the main peak unless you’re confident and respectful. With so many peaks along the beach, you can often find a great wave all to yourself just a short walk away.

Ideal Wave Height: This spot works from waist high to well overhead.

X Factor: Expect power. This wave hits harder than Playa Carmen — on overhead days bring the right board and be ready to commit.
