Surfing Playa Carmen, Costa Rica
A Fun Surf Spot For sUrfers of All Levels!
One of the most Consistent Beach Breaks in Costa Rica
The Spot: Playa Carmen is one of Costa Rica’s most reliable and accessible beach breaks—perfect for beginners, intermediates, and experienced surfers alike. Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, this sandy stretch offers great waves year-round and a laid-back surf vibe that keeps people coming back.
Playa Carmen is approx. 1.5km of beach break, mostly white sand with the occasional rock outcropping. Main peaks are in front of Restaurante Playa Carmen, with more peaks spread out northward.
Crowd & Vibe: Expect a friendly, mellow crowd, especially during the off-season. During high season (December–April), the lineup can get a bit busy, particularly with surf schools and beginners—but the beach's length offers plenty of space to spread out.
Ideal Wave Height: Knee-high to a couple feet overhead
Works Year-Round: Playa Carmen handles a variety of swells and remains surfable in most conditions
X Factor: Due to the angle and underwater topography especially when there’s swell Playa Carmen will give you more of a shoulder burn than any of the other beach breaks around. Also watch out for surf schools and especially keep an eye out for unexperienced surf instructors and beginners bobbing in the lineup or on the inside.
